Birthstone for June

On April 17, 1834, the Russian Empire was celebrating the 16th birthday of the future "Tsar," (emperor of Russia) Alexander II. A color changing gemstone was found in an emerald mine. They named the scarce, "magical," stone that changed colors, Alexandrite, after Alexander II.
The stone became symbolic of the reign of Alexander II. The magic of the changing colors directly reflected the thoughts ruled by the emperors since 1480; where every written and spoken word had a second meaning.
The gemstone changed from red to green hues and was thought to have mystical powers, the possibility of predicting the future, and providing the wearer with good health and luck.
Russia is a primary source of Alexandrite, still to this day, although the stone has been found is some other countries, such as India.
Alexandrite is a hard, durable stone, that changes colors. During the day it is a blueish/green hue and at night it is a redish hue. It is a birthstone for the month of June, and it is also the stone associated with a 55th wedding anniversary.
